How to Pack a Self Storage Unit Properly
Packing a storage unit well is the difference between a tidy, accessible space you actually enjoy using, and a wall of boxes you cannot face on a Saturday morning. Good packing protects your belongings from damage, helps you find things quickly, and lets you fit more into the same unit. None of it is complicated, but a few small habits make a noticeable difference. Here is the practical Box and Lock guide, drawn from years of helping Gold Coast locals move in and out of our Nerang facility.
Before You Pack: Plan and Measure
Walk through what you are storing before you start carrying anything. Group items by category, work out roughly how many boxes you will need, and check the unit size against your list. Our space calculator takes a few minutes and will save you a wasted trip if you have undersized your unit. Measure any large pieces of furniture, particularly anything that might be a tight fit through the unit door.
What You’ll Need
Good packing starts with the right materials. The basics are:
- Strong cardboard boxes in a couple of sizes
- Plastic tubs for anything humidity-sensitive
- Packing tape and a tape gun
- Bubble wrap, butcher’s paper, or packing paper
- Furniture covers or old sheets
- A permanent marker for labelling
- A floor covering such as a pallet or plastic sheeting
Our on-site supplies include all of the above. Our packaging guide covers the right approach for specific items if you are not sure how to wrap something.
Heavy on the Bottom, Light on the Top
Pack each box from heaviest to lightest. Books, tools, and crockery go on the bottom; clothing, linen, and softer items go on top. Keep individual boxes under 15 kilograms so you can carry them comfortably, and tape both the top and the bottom to stop the base giving way. Do not leave gaps inside a box; loose contents shift in transit and arrive bruised.
Load the Unit From the Back Forward
Once you start loading the unit, work from the back wall toward the door. Large, sturdy items go in first along the back and sides. Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier ones, never the other way around. Keep anything you might need to access regularly closer to the door, and label box ends so you can read the label without unstacking everything.
Protect Fragile and Electronic Items
Anything breakable benefits from a layer of padding on all six sides of the box. Wrap glass and ceramics individually, and use bubble wrap or paper to fill any voids. For electronics, the original boxes are ideal. If you no longer have them, double-box the item with padding in between. Remove batteries before storing remotes, toys, or small appliances, since old batteries can leak and ruin the electronics. Always label fragile boxes clearly.
Looking After Furniture
Furniture should be clean, dry, and lightly polished if wooden, before it goes into storage. Wrap upholstered pieces in proper covers rather than plastic, which traps moisture. Disassemble what you can. Beds, tables, and bookshelves all save real space once broken down, and the screws and fittings should go in a labelled zip-lock bag taped to the main piece. Stand mattresses on their side and keep them off the bare floor.
Leave a Walkway
If your unit is more than a few square metres, leave a narrow walkway down the middle so you can reach the back without unloading the front. It feels like wasted space at first but pays for itself the first time you need to grab one item without spending half an hour on it.
A Quick Packing Checklist
- Measure, plan, and order supplies a few days ahead
- Pack room by room and label every box
- Heavy items on the bottom, fragile items wrapped on all sides
- Disassemble large furniture and bag the hardware
- Load the unit from back to front, leaving a walkway
- Keep frequently used items near the door
