What Self Storage Is For (and What It Isn’t)

A self storage unit can hold almost anything you would normally keep at home, in a garage, or in a small office. Furniture, clothing, business stock, electronics, tools, sporting gear, documents, and seasonal items are all welcome. There are a handful of things you cannot store, mostly for safety, legal, or insurance reasons. Knowing the difference before you book a unit saves time, prevents surprises on move-in day, and keeps everyone on site safe.

At Box and Lock, our team is happy to talk through anything you are not sure about. The list below covers the most common questions our Nerang facility gets from new customers.

What Can You Store in a Self Storage Unit?

The short answer is most of your usual household and business possessions. People typically use personal storage for things like:

  • Furniture during a move, renovation, or downsize
  • Boxes of clothing, kitchenware, books, and personal effects
  • Seasonal items such as Christmas decorations, winter bedding, and beach gear
  • Sporting and hobby equipment, including bikes, golf clubs, surfboards, and camping kit
  • White goods that are not currently in use
  • Family heirlooms, antiques, and collectables

Small businesses on the Gold Coast use business storage for stock overflow, archived records, marketing displays, tradie tools, and trade show equipment. Vehicle storage covers caravans, boats, trailers, and second vehicles that will not fit at home.

What Can’t You Store?

Some items are prohibited because they are unsafe, illegal, or pose a risk to other customers’ belongings. The standard list includes:

  • Perishable food: fresh, frozen, or anything that can spoil and attract pests
  • Flammable and combustible liquids: petrol, kerosene, paint thinners, propane and gas bottles
  • Explosives, ammunition, and fireworks
  • Live plants and animals: units are not designed for living things
  • Hazardous chemicals: pesticides, asbestos, fertiliser, pool chemicals
  • Illegal items or stolen goods
  • Cash, valuables that exceed your insurance cover, and irreplaceable originals

If you are unsure whether something falls into one of these categories, ask before you bring it in. Most grey-area items have a simple workaround, such as emptying a petrol tank before storing a mower.

Items That Need a Bit of Extra Care

A few categories are allowed but benefit from proper preparation:

  • Electronics: back up data, remove batteries, and store in original boxes where possible
  • Whitegoods: defrost and dry fridges and freezers thoroughly, and leave doors slightly ajar
  • Wooden furniture: clean, wax if needed, and avoid placing directly on the floor
  • Mattresses and upholstery: use proper covers to keep dust and humidity off the fabric
  • Important documents: store in sealed plastic tubs rather than cardboard
  • Tools and equipment: clean off dirt and moisture, and treat metal with a light coat of oil

Our packaging guide walks through the right way to prepare most household items, and our on-site supplies include boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and protective covers if you need to grab anything on the day.

Insurance and Valuables

Self storage is secure, but it is not a vault. Box and Lock’s Nerang facility has 24/7 surveillance, gated access with individual PIN codes, your own padlock, and pest control across the site. For most household and business goods that level of security is more than enough. For high-value items such as jewellery, irreplaceable artwork, or large sums of cash, talk to your insurer about appropriate cover before you store them, or consider whether a safe deposit box is a better fit.

Still Not Sure?

If you have something specific in mind and you are not sure whether it is allowed, the easiest thing is to ask. Have a look through our FAQs for the most common questions, or get in touch through our contact page and the team at Box and Lock Nerang will let you know straight away. It is better to check first than to turn up with something we cannot accept.
